Closing ceremonies of the Mission of Assistance to Remove Mines in South America (MARMINAS) - Peru and Equador

MARMINAS was created by the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) on May 1st, 2003, with the objective to offer technical assistance to the “Programa de Acción Integral contra Minas Antipersonal” (AICMA) of the Organization of American States (OAS), in the borders of Equador and Perú, and, this way, to fulfill its purpose of providing, to OAS and its Member States, technical, consultative and educative advice, on issues related to military and defense questions on the Hemisphere, in order to contribute to the achievement of OAS Charter.

After more than 10 years, MARMINAS had the participation of more than 79 Interamerican Monitors, which 49 were brazilians, 18 chileans, 6 hondureans and 6 nicaraguans, who, with the support, fraternal conviviality and unrestricted hospitality of military and civil population, Ecuadorian and Peruvian, reached expressive results, removing more than thirteen thousand and five hundred antipersonnel mines, in operational environment of jungle and mountain terrain, covering an area of more than three hundred and sixty- eight thousand square meters.

    On January, 15th, at the “Dirección Geral de Desminado Humanitario del Ejército de Perú” (DIGEDEHUME), in Lima, took place the Closing Ceremony of the MARMINAS, in Perú.
    The Ceremony had the presence of the main following personalities: Brazilian Ambassador to Perú, Carlos Alfredo Lazary Teixeira; Ecuadorian Ambassador to Perú, José Sandoval Zambrano; Hondurean Ambassador to Perú, Humberto Lopez Villamil Ochoa; Representative of Chilean Ambassador to Perú, Fabio Vio Ugarte; Nicaraguan Ambassador to Perú, Marcela María Pérez Silva; Representative of the Secretary General of OAS in Perú, Pablo Zuñiga; Representative of the Chief of the DIGEDEHUME, General de Brigada Oscar Jesus Dextre Fernandez; Director of Security and Defense of the Foreign Office of Perú, Carlos Gil de Montes Molinari; Director General of the IADB Secretariat, Vice Admiral Bento Costa Lima Leite de Albuquerque Junior; and the Chief of the MARMINAS, Captain (Brazilian Marine Corps) José Roberto Nunes da Silva.

Military Ceremony

    On January, 17th, at the “Escuela Superior Militar Eloy Alfaro”, in Quito, took place the Military Ceremony in tribute to the MARMINAS, in Equador, in charge of the Defense Department of Equador.
    The Ceremony had the presence of the main following personalities: Vice Minister of Defense of Equador, Doctor Carlos Larrea; Chilean Ambassador to Equador, Juan Pablo Lira Bianchi; Representative of Brazilian Ambassador to Equador, Counselor Minister Jonas Guimarães Ferreira; Commander of the Combined Command of the Armed Forces of Equador; Commander of the Army, Navy and Air Force of Equador; Director General or the IADB Secretariat, Vice Admiral Bento Costa Lima Leite de Albuquerque Junior; and Chief of the MARMINAS, Captain (Brazilian Marine Corps) José Roberto Nunes da Silva.

    On the night of January, 17th, in the residency of the Chilean Ambassador to Equador, occurred the Closing Ceremony of the MARMINAS, with the participation of the following personalities: Vice Minister of Defense of Equador, Doctor Carlos Larrea; Chilean Ambassador to Equador, Juan Pablo Lira Bianchi; Representative of the Brazilian Ambassador to Equador, Counselor Minister Jonas Guimarães Ferreira; Director General of the IADB Secretariat, Vice Admiral Bento Costa Lima Leite de Albuquerque Junior; and Chief of the MARMINAS, Captain (Brazilian Marine Corps) José Roberto Nunes da Silva.
