The President of the Council of Delegates of the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB), Vice Admiral Gonzalo Rios Polastri, met with Major General Kenrick Maharaj, Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), and Brigadier-General Phillips-Spencer, Vice Chief of Defense Staff (VCDS) of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force on the 23th November 2015 and a follow-on meeting with the VCDS on the 24th November, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

The meetings were very cordial and focused on the IADB support to the Caribbean Region as Facilitator, and as technical advisor to the Secretariat Pro-Tempore of the XII CDMA.

Specific to the role of Facilitator of the IADB, the CDS and VCDS were very pleased to note the Board’s initiative to strengthen its relationship with regional organizations such as CARICOM IMPACS, Regional Security System (RSS) and Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). A discussion on the great importance of the IADB relations with the specialized Conferences of the Armed Forces (CAA, IANC and SICOFAA), and other regional or sub-regional organizations or Conferences also took place.

This meeting was also great opportunity to reiterate the IADB’s appreciation for Trinidad and Tobago’s confidence in the Board’s ability to support the Secretariat Pro Tempore of the XII CDMA. The meeting also allowed for interesting discussion on the new global security landscape and the importance of collaboration and coordination to fight the resulting emerging threats.  The IADB’s intent to organize a series of seminars or conferences on different themes related to the different thematic axis of the XII CDMA was also very well received.

Vice Admiral Gonzalo Rios Polastri also reiterated the importance of Trinidad and Tobago’s leadership and support within the IADB, reiterating the great importance for the Board to receive students and personal from Trinidad and Tobago to fill either staff or senior level positions.

Major General Kenrick Maharaj, and staff were very appreciative for this visit of the IADB and the support provided to the Secretariat pro Tempore of the XII CDMA, with a special mention for the very useful reports provided to the Secretariat Pro tempore to assist in the preparation of the last preparatory meeting of the XII CDMA that took place in October 2015. The CDS and Staff are looking forward to the continued and growing collaboration with the IADB.
