    On Thursday July 30th, the Secretary General of the OAS, Ambassador Luis Almagro, visited the “Casa del Soldado,” the headquarters of the IADB, accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Colombia, the President of the Committee on Hemispheric Security of the OAS, Ambassador Andrés Gonzales and officials of the General Secretariat. He was welcomed by the President of the Council of Delegates of the Inter-American Defense Board, Gonzalo Ríos Polastri, the Director General of the Secretariat, Major General of the Air Force Mauricio Ribeiro Gonçalves and the Vice Director of the Inter-American Defense College, Brigadier of Air Alexandre Wagner Celso de Souza.

    As part of the visit, an exposition was programmed in the conference room of the Council of Delegates concerning thematic areas and the major coordination of the diverse components of the OAS. Them being, the different aspects of participation for Humanitarian Demining, the preparation to optimize the mechanism of response to natural disasters, the possibilities of participation during the process of disarmament and projects for the formulation assessment of Defense Policies as well as other administrative aspects.

    Towards the end of the exposition, Ambassador Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the OAS, took the floor to mention the necessity of implementing a new work methodology joint with the OAS, applying the knowledge and capacity of the IADB, primarily in the resolution of humanitarian issues at the Hemispheric level. He also highlighted the intentions of the OAS in expanding the activities of the Board, on areas related to security and defense in which its member states might need advice.

    They then proceeded to visit the installations of the “Casa del Soldado.”
