On 20th and 21st August last sessions of the V SOUTHDEC 2015 were held, attended on behalf of the Inter-American Defense Board Vice Chair of the Council of Delegates Brigadier General Jaime Gonzales Avalos.

In addition to presentation of the two panels on the 18th and 19th, the last panel presented was titled Civil-Military Operations to Counter Regional Challenges. In this opportunity different perspectives from which the hemisphere address this issue were explained.

The working panels were complemented with exhibits on topics of hemispheric defense and security such as new threats and developments, transnational organized crime, cooperation in air dominance and the performance of the Armed Forces in support of Civil Defense.

Complementarily bilateral meetings with US officials took Bolivia and Ecuador, in addition to those held with the representative of Peru and Paraguay.

The IADB assists SOUTHDEC conference according to its role as advisor on defense and security to the Organization of American States.

On August 19th in Asuncion, Paraguay, began the V South American Defense Conference SOUTHDEC 2015 having representatives of authorities from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, United States, Peru and Uruguay as well as the Inter-American Defense Board represented by its Vice President.

The South American Defense Conference is sponsored by the Southern Command and aims at promoting opportunities for dialogue and exchange of experiences between security and defense leaders from Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

During the conference two working groups presentations were briefed: The first one dealt with regional threats and the second with sovereignty and territorial defense against transnational threats.

This time the host countries were Paraguay represented by Army General Luis Gonzaga Garcete Espinola and the United States represented by the Marine Corps General John Kelly, Head of the Southern Command.

Meetings will continue on August 20, 2015.
